We are often asked the difference between passport books and passport cards. Passport books are what is considered the traditional passport with most having 28 pages for visa and country enter and card exit stamps. They can be used for all international travel and do not have limitations like the passport.
Passport cards are a credit card or drivers license size card and are available for US citizens. They are limited use for travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean and can only be used for land and sea travel to these countries and cannot be used for international air travel or for visas. They are convenient and less expensive but do have significant limitations.
A major consideration when deciding whether a passport book or passport card is right for you when traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean is that although you can enter the country by land or sea with the card, if something happened that you needed to depart by air you would not be able to do so with the passport card.
